NW China Sanitarium & Hospital 1934

The Branch hospital in Shenyang was also donated by Marshall Chang. Both were full of patients. But the war and the evacuation of overseas workers in both hospitals resulted in a very difficult situation. From 1946 to 1947 they were closed for a year. Even though a last effort was attempted by pouring in new personnel and money, the civil war was so severe, they were closed in 1948. The Northwest Sanitarium and Hospital was opened in 1934 in Lanzhou, Gansu province, an important point along the Silk Road. Dr. M H Vinkelwas the first Medical Director, later Drs. C C Wang, Paul Hwang, H Y Zhu, S W Lee served in succession but in short durations. The hospital was taken over by the government in 1950. In 1982 the writer visited the site of this hospital but it appeared to be very old and out of repair.
