Wuhan, Hubei
Wuhan Sanitarium & Hospital 1937

Situated in the heart of China, or the Chicago of China, the Wuhan hospital was built in 1937. Besides the hospital in Wuhan, clinics were opened in Hankou and Hanyang, the other two parts of the city. Dr. Harry Miller was the first Medical Director. By 1941, the Pacific War broke out and many expatriate workers had to return home, so local workers were to take over. At one time 17,000 refugees were crowding in the hospital compound to avoid the Japanese air mid. Dr. Miller was forced to be their mayor, to feed them with the help of Red Cross and to maintain law and order. In 1951 Dr. Li Tien Xi was the Medical Director under the communist rule. Unfortunately he was falsely accused to have been corrupt and was abruptly executed without a trial.  Repeated appeals finally got a court order to exonerate him in 1985, 33 year after his death.
