Wai On Hospital 1926
The Wai On Hospital began when Drs. Herbert and Ethel James came to work in the Hakka Mission; Dr. Herbert James was born in China. His parents were physicians. At the time of his arrival, Elder Sherman Nagel, the leader of the Mission, found a piece of land, about 7 acres, outside the city gate, and he made a request for finds to build a school. But the Union had no money and that plan vanished like a dream. To relieve the frustrated mind, he took the family to Hong Kong for a vacation, where he met a rich American businessman by the name of Detwilderwho wanted to visit China. Volunteered to be his guide, Elder Nagel took him to see Wai Chow.
They also saw the land that was intended for a new school. The Holy Spirit must have touched his heart; Mr. Detwilder offered to pay for the land and all construction expenses. And it was on this land we later built the Wai On Hospital. In 1926 the hospital opened its door.Forover twenty years, this hospital served thousands of people, exemplified the love of Jesus Christ and opened the door for the gospel work. During the Second World War, when the hospital had to move to a safer location, the government, the local people, even the bandits, all did their best to help. Assure the safety of the SDA group. The strong church work in the Hakka Mission was largely due to the good influence of the Wai On Hospital.
