Guangzhou Sanitarium & Hospital 1931

The Guangzhou (Canton) Hospital began as a clinic in 1925. By 1931, a hospital was built. DrBates was the Medical Director. Dr. Ang, Dr. Basil Vassantachant’s maternal grandfather, was the chief of staff and his wife was in charge of the Maternity Department. All was well until 1941 when Medical Director Dr. Coffin was locked up in the concentration camp by the Japanese. The local workers tried to keep the hospital opened. In 1943, the war finally forced the hospital to close. Most workers and nursing school students moved to join the Wai On Hospital. After the war, Dr. Coffin went home in 1946 for furlough; Dr. Albert Liu acted in his place. After some changes of personnel the hospital was taken over by the government in 1950.
