The earliest founder of Kangding (Once called Hitting Arrow Stove) Church and Hospital was Andrews whom the local people referred to as The Man of Peace. The church and the hospital were located in the northern part of Kangding, taking up an area of about ten acres. The earliest electrical lights were set up by The Man of Peace. The Man of Peace was specialized at surgery, internal medicine, gynecology and obstetrics. After he returned home, Pastor Chiang Sun took up his work, later on Dr. Jeh Ming An. At that time, Dr. Jeh Ming An was known as the best physician in Kangding and he was also good at wood work and letter press printing. He owned a round disc machine for printing English articles to help people.
In 1937, there came four medical workers from Kuche River of Henan, Gong Pin Shan, Jia Huan Zhen, Wang Wei Shong and Huong Chi Lan. Every day there were more than 30 out-patients and 20 in-patients. In 1939 summer, all four of them left Kangding. During winter, Pastor Chiang Sun came to Kangding to take the place of Jeh Ming An, and I went to Chongqing to continue my study. During that time, a Denmark doctor Man Mou Tien, and several others, such as Huang Tsi Yan were in charge of the church and medical work. Several workers were transferred from Wuhan Sanitarium, such as Kou Ming and Wu Huong Li. After the outbreak of the Pacific War, Gong Pin Shan and Jia Huan Zhen came to Kangding again along with Dr. Ma Sing, and Dr. Lin Si Ron. Along were also some nurses, Lee An Le, Zhang Wan Xin, Tang KungAn (younger sister of Tang YaWwi) and Pi SouMing (the accountant). That was the most prosperous days for the Hospital and the Church. Gong Pin Shan was the President of the Hospital and the Conference. In Yaan, a church was also established. Lu SouDau was in charge of the work. There were more than 10 church members and on Sabbath around 40-50 people met together for church.
Around 1948, Ma Sing, Lin Si Ron and several other medical workers left Kangding gradually. Only Gong Pin Shan was there to be in charge of the work in the Hospital and the church.
In 1950, Kangding was liberated. In 1947, our church established “Sam Yuk Primary School”. It recruited students from the Church as well as outside of the Church. That time quite a number of high officials from the government sent their children to our church school, including the children of the Education Department Head. Due to the limitation of the school building, only a limited number of students were taken in. Finally the number of students reached 150. Unfortunately, after liberation, the school was closed down.
In 1951May, the hospital was taken over by the government and our church only existed in name. After the taken over, Mr. and Mrs. Gong Pin Shan was transferred to Kangding, that was the prelude of the Three Revolts Movement. At the end of the year 1951, the Three Revolts Movement started, we all were the focus of the attack. It was even worse for Gong Pin Shan in Yaan.Jia HuanZhen couldn’t stand the torture and shame, finally jumped out of the building and Gong Pin Shan died in the prison to jump out of the building. The Adventist Church disappeared from Kangding then.
